It’s a fair question. And it’s also a hard one to answer in a straight line – because every kitchen is its own story, and the cost follows the kitchen, not the other way around.

Where Most Calgary Kitchens Land

We have a process that allows us to fully estimate our projects upfront. Over the years, we’ve watched most of our Calgary kitchens settle into one of three places. 

A refresh. Somewhere between $50,000 and $80,000. The layout stays the same. The cabinet boxes might too. The work is largely surface – refinished cabinetry, new hardware, a new countertop, perhaps a backsplash and lighting. Done well, a refresh can buy a kitchen several more years of life.

A mid-range custom kitchen. Somewhere between $115,000 and $150,000 without appliances. The layout shifts. The cabinetry is new – often custom or semi-custom. Stone replaces laminate. The lighting is reworked. The kitchen begins to feel truly considered.

A luxury custom kitchen. Somewhere between $150,000 and $400,000, sometimes more. Every layer is bespoke. Custom millwork. Stone selected as part of a unified design language. Integrated appliances. Layout changes that may involve structural work or extending into adjacent rooms. This is the tier most of our clients arrive at – not because they planned to, but because the kitchen they were really after lives there.

A few honest caveats: These ranges reflect what we see in Calgary. The cost of a new kitchen in Canada shifts city to city – Vancouver and Toronto often run higher. And every renovation is scoped individually. The only number that matters is the one shaped to your kitchen, in your home.

What You’re Actually Paying For

The bigger question – and the one worth understanding before you set a budget – is what you’re paying for at each tier.

In a custom kitchen, most of the cost lives in these four quiet places.

Cabinetry

This is where the kitchen’s character is decided. Custom cabinetry, built drawer by drawer for the way you actually store and cook, is more expensive than ordering from a catalogue for genuine reasons. It fits the architecture. It lasts. It feels right under your hand for the next twenty years. Custom cabinetry cost is what most people underestimate, and where the kitchen’s lifespan is quietly determined.

Materials

Stone, tile, hardware, lighting, paint, plumbing fixtures. The difference between a $5,000 countertop and a $25,000 countertop isn’t manufactured; it’s geological. The difference between a $300 faucet and a $2,000 faucet is engineering you can feel. None of it has to be at the top of the range. But the materials you choose set the kitchen’s tone for years.

Appliances

The cost of appliances can go up pretty quickly – say, from $25,000 to $110,000. Because it’s a really personal choice. And so we consider that an individual selection apart from the kitchen design/millwork/and spec costs. That being said, we’re always happy to support clients through these decisions. 

The work behind the walls

Layout changes mean plumbing, electrical, gas, ventilation, and sometimes structural. Moving a sink three feet costs more than you’d expect. Moving a stove across the room can mean rerouting a gas line, a hood vent, and the electrical. The visible kitchen is half the project. The invisible kitchen is the other half.

None of these things will show up in a brochure. Every one of them will show up in the way you live in the kitchen after.

What We’d Want You to Know About Budget

A few honest principles – the same ones we share at every consultation.

• Budget for the kitchen you’ll still love in fifteen years, not the one that fits the cheapest quote. Custom kitchens have long lives. The savings from cutting corners early have a way of surfacing later.
• Spend on the things you touch every day. The faucet. The drawer pulls. The cabinetry. The lighting at the island. These are the elements your hands and eyes meet a hundred times a week.
• Plan for the unseen. Older Calgary homes – especially in the inner-city neighbourhoods – often surface electrical, plumbing, or structural surprises during demolition. We build a contingency into every budget. We’d recommend you do the same.
• Get clarity on what’s included. A quote that’s significantly lower than others usually has something missing. Cabinetry. Appliances. Trades. Comparing on price alone, without comparing on scope, rarely gives a useful answer.
