What Does A Bathroom Remodel Cost (And What Drives the Investment)?
A bathroom is one of the smallest rooms in a home. It’s also the ones our clients think about the most.
The primary ensuite that never quite worked. The family bathroom designed for someone else’s family. The powder room that greets every guest with dated tile and yellowing light.
At some point, most homeowners land at the same question:
What would it actually take to remodel this?
And then, right behind it:
What would that cost?
We get asked this often. And like most honest answers about design work, this one starts with a range and gets more useful from there.
Where Most Bathroom Remodels Land
Over the years, we’ve watched most of our Calgary bathroom projects settle into one of three places.
- A refresh: somewhere between $25,000 and $35,000. The layout stays the same. The vanity might too. New hardware, new fixtures, new paint, maybe an updated tile floor. Done well, a refresh can freshen a bathroom without opening walls.
- A mid-range custom bathroom: somewhere between $35,000 and $80,000. New vanity (often custom or semi-custom), new stone or tile, updated fixtures and lighting, some plumbing changes. This is where a bathroom begins to feel genuinely considered.
- A luxury bathroom renovation: somewhere between $80,000 and $250,000, sometimes more for a full primary ensuite. Every layer is bespoke. Custom millwork vanity. Stone selected as part of a unified design language. Custom shower with heated floors. Freestanding soaker tub. Layout changes that may involve moving plumbing or extending into adjacent space. This is the tier most of our clients arrive at—not because they set out to, but because the bathroom they were really after lives there.
A few honest caveats. These ranges reflect the Calgary market. A high-end bathroom renovation cost in Vancouver or Toronto often runs higher. And every bathroom is scoped individually. The only number that matters is the one shaped to your specific room.
What You’re Actually Paying For
The more useful question (and the one worth understanding before you set a budget) is what you’re actually paying for at each tier.
In a custom bathroom design, most of the cost lives in four quiet places.
- Custom vanities and millwork. A vanity built to fit the exact dimensions of the room and the way you actually use it (deep drawers where you need them, hidden outlets, sculpted stone tops) is significantly more expensive than a store-bought unit. It’s also the piece that gives the bathroom its architecture.
- Stone and tile. A bathroom has more surface area per square foot than almost any other room. Every wall is potentially finished. Every floor. Every shower niche. The stone or tile you choose (from budget porcelain to bookmatched marble) sets the aesthetic and a significant portion of the cost.
- Fixtures and fittings. The tub. The taps. The shower system. The lighting. Bathroom fixtures have a wide price range (a showerhead can be $800 or $2,500) and the differences are real. Better fittings last longer, feel better under hand, and work more reliably over time.
- The invisible work. Waterproofing. Plumbing rough-ins. Ventilation. Electrical for heated floors and lighting. Membrane systems for wet zones. None of it shows up in a photograph. All of it determines whether the bathroom holds up over decades.
Why Custom Costs More (And What You Get For It)
The Calgary bathrooms we design and build are custom from vanity to fixtures. That’s a choice, and it has cost implications.
Custom cabinetry made in our in-house millwork shop takes longer than ordering from a catalogue. Stone selected and templated for your specific bathroom takes more care than slab-and-go. Designing the layout around the way your family actually uses the room adds time at the front of the project.
What you get for that investment is a bathroom that fits.
The vanity height that suits your hands. The drawers that hold your things. The stone that reads warmly under morning light and softly under evening. The tub positioned exactly where the sun falls in on a Saturday morning.
None of these things show up in a brochure. Every one of them shows up in the way you use the room after.
There’s another quieter advantage to a full-service approach (where design, millwork, and construction sit under one roof). Nothing is lost in handoff. The bathroom drawn on day one is the bathroom you walk into on reveal day.
What We’d Want You to Know About Budget
A few principles; the same ones we share at every consultation.
- Budget for the bathroom you’ll still love in fifteen years. Custom bathrooms hold up if they’re specified well. The temptation to cut on stone, tile, or fixtures usually surfaces later, in ways you can see and feel.
- Spend on the things you touch every day. The tap. The vanity drawer pull. The shower system. The tile underfoot. These are the elements you interact with every morning and every evening. Modest upgrades here pay back in daily experience.
- Plan for the unseen. Older Calgary bathrooms often surface plumbing, electrical, or moisture surprises during demolition. We build a contingency into every budget. We’d recommend you do the same.
- Get clarity on what’s included. A quote that’s noticeably lower than others usually has something missing (often the waterproofing, the tile install labour, or the fixtures). Comparing on price alone, without comparing on scope, rarely gives a useful answer.

The honest answer to how much does it cost to remodel a bathroom is it depends, and that’s not a dodge.
It depends on the bathroom you’re really after. The home it sits within. The depth of the work. The conversation that gives this question a specific answer is the one we have over the consultation table.
